Research For The Globe

We are doing another tour at The Globe and this time I've sort of took on a little preparation role for it, trying to find links between each category that we have. For the lead up to it we have been doing a lot of improvisation work around death and mystery, trying to get the creative side of our brains flowing.

Thursday 14th September

This was the start of the research, I got put in the group where we had to research about children in the mines. I took it upon myself to try and find some Victorian England books in the LRC that might mention about children in the mines. Sadly, there wasn't much information about children being in the mines. So we resorted to using the internet where we found jobs the children would have to do in the mines and we started coming up with stories and little improv pieces we could out together that we could use for The Globe.

Monday 18th September

We got put back into our groups and were tasked with adding more information, I went away to the LRC to make a word document to see if I could find anymore information, I managed to find some more jobs the children used to, I also found a picture of a death count of how some people had died and how old they were when they died. I found some real life stories from children as and what they had experienced.

After this a little group of us got together and started talking about the tour and how we think it should work. We have a day time and evening showing, the day time showing is to be more for school kids whereas the evening showing is the more gory/gruesome one. So we came up with some ideas on how we could maybe link it in with last years tour or go our own sort of route. We also wanted the idea of the kids getting involved and maybe going on a little scavenger hunt. So we came up with concepts of like detectives for the kid one that could be investigating what happened with last years tour and they end up going through time and seeing all the different events happen again right in front of them.

I've decided to take more of a production type role for the preparation of The Globe, as I haven't really done much behind the scenes work for shows. So I wanted to help more and push myself to learn something new.

Wednesday 20th September

Today we worked on more improvisation since a lot of what we do for The Globe is thinking on the spot. We were given a little murder mystery scenario, where we had the detective leave the room and we had to come up with a scene of how the murderer killed the victim but add all our motives in it. We would then get questioned and have to make it hard for the detective figure out who the murderer was. This helps with The Globe, as we were devising a compelling story with little information that we had.

After this a group of us went into the black box room to help come up with more ideas on how the tour would work and how we would link it all together. Kelly tasked me with going away and getting information for Victorian England children instead of children in the mines since it would be easier to link it with everything else we had going on.

Here is the information I went and collected for Victorian Child labour, as I was getting the information I was thinking of makeup designs, a good makeup design was having someones jaw partly disintegrated since, kids would sell matches and they would get 'phossy jaw' which is a type of bone jaw cancer that disintegrated the jaw.

I found jobs such as
  • factory workers
  • chimney sweeps
  • selling matches
  • working in mines
  • cotton mills/mills
I then elaborated and got more information on each one as seen in the image.

Thursday 21st September

Today I went around after gathering all the information and tried to link the jobs that they did for child labour with everything else here are some of the links I put together as well as some stories that I also started making up.
